Lumen asks for photo verification — you have to take a real-time selfie that will go through facial recognition and determine the legitimacy of uploaded pictures. This selfie is never published, so there’s no need to glam up.

Profile

Lumen encourages users to fill out personal descriptions and sexual preferences. Reading the descriptions is fun — people go all in about their expectations. The profile gives enough information to carry you through the first date.

To get the profile activated, users have to add at least three pictures, but not more than six — each of them passes a facial recognition verification.

It is my favorite feature — users participate in romantic and casual discussions on any of 7 topics: film and TV, home and garden, food, travel, sports, meet & greet, and a technical forum with Lumen dating reviews. My favorite community was “Meet & Greet” — it unites the most dedicated users of the app.

The discussions are structured in threads, like in Reddit. If you are more of a blogging person, you can create your community and post updates, even find followers. If you want to get to know some members closer, tap once — the app redirects you to the messenger.

The rule of thumb is, the more active you are in the community, the easier to find a partner. You have to show initiative instead of relying only on the feed.

It’s a typical messenger — you can send and receive texts, preview their status, and exchange attachments. My eye caught a “Rewind” feature that allows previewing the last 10 skipped profiles — a fantastic option if you accidentally passed on someone.

Privacy and security

The moderation team does a great job of reviewing all active users, even those that registered a while ago. Too bad that these rules always keep users on their toes — you never know when a profile can be deleted.

Still, despite the inconvenience of Lumen’s safety checks, they work. You can barely find a shady profile; thankfully, my mom never got offensive messages.

Privacy Policy, however, didn’t seem as trustworthy — the app uses Russian servers to store sensitive data, and on top of that, the description of security practices is incredibly vague.

In Lumenapp.com reviews, users regularly complain that they can’t delete profiles — and it’s true. A traditional “right to be forgotten” was ignored by the app’s developers.

Finding a partner in the single Lumen community wasn’t much of a challenge. You got a feed, thematic communities, and filtered search with real users. Here, people treat dating seriously — the “Meet & Greet” community serves a proof of that; I saw new reviews about meetings every day.

Matching algorithms

Lumen doesn’t evaluate competitive profiles or send personalized digest. The search filters are not too impressive either — I could sort profiles by age, distance, and gender. To know more, you have to click on each profile manually, read the description, and hope that a user will mention all the important details. It’s just not working for me — and my mom.

Because of these matching limitations, the feed is useless. I recommend heading straight to communities — at least you get to have fun there.
